Now, that I have your attention with that zinger... I am wondering how many of you have read similar misleading headlines recently?
It never ceases to amaze me what misinformation can be passed around. I've been guilty of it a few times myself and have been directed to Snopes.com regarding things like the infamous letter from Cindy Williams complaining that service members make plenty of money. The Ms. Williams in question is not the actress from the popular 1970s sit-com, Laverne and Shirley, but misinformation has caused her to be dragged through the mud over it. The real culprit is a Cindy Williams from MIT.
People are boycotting Girl Scout Cookie sales in Waco and other communities in my area. This is the first time I've bought cookies in years, so I think that tells you where I stand.
This whole thing got started because The BBGSC (Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council) honored one of the executives of the Planned Parenthood Program with a Woman of Distinction Award. The Council, which my daughters and I were members of for many years, had been one of the sponsors for a program called "Nobody's Fool" run by Planned Parenthood. Seems no one noticed until this award was given.
Close to ten years ago, BBGSC, started a program for the high school girls regarding teenage pregnancy. Leaders were told that they would be required to take special training courses before even approaching the subject with their teenage scouts because it was a "very sensitive issue" according to then Council President, Connie Clark. I notice there was no huge outcry over that program.
The first misconception is that the Girl Scouts are a Christian organization. They are not. They not only have members of all creeds, but have created programs for girls to explore their own faith in depth. When my oldest began as a Daisy in 1985, there was a controversy over the use of the word "God" in the Promise. Girls were told that they could substitute whatever word applied.. such as Allah, Jehovah... Creator.. or leave that portion out entirely.
What's really going on is a few narrow-minded people have decided that a possibly beneficial program to teenagers should be condemned and an organization that has allowed material to be distributed for the program, possibly to redirect the energies of hormonal teens should go down with them. Parents should realize that it is better for their teenagers to get correct information, no matter how immoral they deem it, than die of ignorance. It is up to the parents to help their children make good choices, but teenagers have that "it can't happen to me" attitude until someone close to them is no longer among the living and then... it's too late.
No one is forcing anyone's child to participate in "Nobody's Fool." It's optional. The fuss is because Planned Parenthood is a provider of abortions. BBGSC is sponsoring a program to that might prevent the need for abortions. What I find frustrating is that the loudest voices in the "don't teach our children about sex" camp are the usually ones that don't want to do it themselves.
It's a shame that people are taking revenge on young girls by not participating in the cookie sales. That is their choice. In my opinion, what the originators of this boycott don't realize is, it makes them far worse than those so-called immoral people that are sponsoring "Nobody Fool." Way to go, show the kids who's boss by using terrorist tactics. What's next on the agenda a field trip to the proposed "Matt Shepard in Hell" monument? There's a lot of hatred in this world, why are the young ladies being made to suffer for the decisions of adults on both sides; the council for supporting an information program and the radio announcer? That's who gets hurt... the children not the Council and surely not the radio announcer who was merely exercising his first amendment rights when asking. Keep in mind that many former Girl Scouts are now out there defending that right, including my own daughter.
That former Girl Scout also defends the right of Pro-Life groups to show graphic images of aborted babies which are far more disturbing to our children than any pictures that could possibly be in a book dealing with sex education.
Part of this was just sent to the Waco Tribune.
