Footnotes in the news and other things...

Actress Natasha Richardson passed away yesterday. She had an accident during a beginner skiing lesson that result in a head injury. People are saying that they think it was something called 'Talk and Die' Syndrome. What that means is people seem fine right after a head injury, but they really aren't. She was referred to in the news as a Hollywood blue blood because she comes from an acting family. Her grandfather was Sir Michael Redgrave, her aunt was Lynn Redgrave, and her mother was Vanessa Redgrave. Her father was film director Tony Richardson. Ms. Richardson was married to Liam Neeson; they have two sons.

Lesson to be learned here is that head injuries should be examined by medical professionals.

I truly feel sorry for the family that had to make the decision to remove their wife, mother, and daughter from life support. It's hard enough to be losing someone you love, but it must be pure hell to know you have to make the decision as to when they depart.

Thanks going out to [livejournal.com profile] elf_fu, [livejournal.com profile] isis, and [livejournal.com profile] ldygwynedd for the awesome post cards! :D

In the news:

Yesterday, another comedian passed on, Bernard McCullough, he was better known as Bernie Mac. He was fifty years old and died from complications of pneumonia in Chicago. Like the late George Carlin, Bernie Mac used colorful language, but underneath it he made a whole lot of sense.

Today's news entry for the strangeness file is ::drumroll:: Bernann McKinney, who recently had her face plastered all over the news with the cloned puppies of her dearly departed pitbull, is suspected of being Joyce McKinney, who, in the 1970's, unlawfully imprisoned a Mormon missionary and forced him into having sex with her. She, along with her accomplice, skipped bail.

Things are status quo in the household at the moment. This is good. ::knocks wood::

I feel physically tired, but my brain is in overdrive hence the weirdness!

Started bagging and tagging January 2006.

Saw Mummy 3. I liked it. Starts slow and quite bluntly there's not much on screen chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello, but it's got action and some of those one liners that the first two films had! I have always liked him in the role of Rick O'Connell, a real guy stuck in an unusual situation. Don't get me wrong, there's wrong with Maria Bello's acting, the pairing just doesn't pack the same punch as Fraser and Weisz. Jet Li was quite good, but I would liked to have seen more of him doing what he does best. As in the previous films, John Hannah, is the comic relief, he delivers well! Luke Ford did a decent job as Alex, not hard on the eyes. Michelle Yeoh kicked ass.

Seems I have a lot of catching up to do around the house and in my LJ reading since I spent a great deal of time snoozing last week. I think I'm finally over whatever it was that knocked me on my rear and then caught the husband and son several days later. Thank you much to those that posted well wishes! :)

The Sims 2 fans might want to take a gander at this, the Apartment Life EP preview. It looks like it will be a lot of fun and somewhat of a mini preview of the Sims 3 concept of a larger scale area to work with. As I acquire new EPs and stuff packs, I sometimes dump similar things that are custom content. For instance, spiral staircases are coming back! Woot! That means I can dump most of the ones are custom content and roll along! They finally get ceilings!! No more pictures with the sky peeking in!!
Spoiler )
So, what I'm wondering is... can we do apartment lots for University?

I have considered packaging up all the houses I have in play, dumping the custom content in the download bin and then reinstalling the house packages so only what I'm actually using loads up, but that might be more trouble than it's worth.

So, depending on what all is happening today (Sunday), I might unplug from the net and fire up Sims 2, play until my head drops, then get a good night's rest so I can get started on the dreaded household tasks for Monday. On the other hand, I might get some writing done. There's food in the house, so other than going over to Wally World for a few minor things, we're in pretty good shape. ::again knocking wood:: I need to check on the white wine supply. Might do the Fight Night thing in RoH, not sure.

I've been trying to confine my complaints about RP to filtered or private LJ entries. Seems to be working out well. Those that want to read can read, those that don't can flee past quickly! On the good side of things: I have managed to get eleven pieces of varying lengths publicly posted.

More later.

I'm trying to sort out a backtrack of a story post for K. Just a bit of fluff, I think, but sometimes fluff is good.

I came across this and I hope every man that I know heeds it, REMEMBERS it and WRITES it down. You have to click Share, More Galleries, and 5 Things You Should NEVER say to a woman. Right out the gate they hit the one that pisses me off EVERY single time that a man says it to me when I'm in a huff: RELAX! Yup, easy as that. I'm entitled to freak out, don't tell me to calm down, just hush up and let me be mad for a while. That does mean the man has to agree with me, just recognize that whatever it was that set me off annoys, irks, or otherwise ticks me off!

Edit (6 May 2008 ): Heh. I meant DOES NOT have to agree with me. Apparently, I was in a real huff when I wrote that!

This video illustrates it just about perfectly! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbSoc0IFydU

First, I heard about the mini city thing from [livejournal.com profile] ladybast. http://mo-chroi.myminicity.com/ If you click the link, you help me boost my little city's population level. Thank you!

So, has anyone else heard the fuss about Chelsea Clinton telling a guy the answer to his question was none of his business?

Come on, Chelsea, you are out on the campaign trail for mom and supposed to be making her look good not coming off like a snarky bitch. Yes, she had every right to tell the guy it was none of his business, BUT... anything a President or potential President does in the public eye is subject to scrutiny.  Frankly, if I had been in her shoes, I think I would have told him that Hillary showed no weakness during the Monica Mess. Hillary tried to protect her daughter as best she could and she was loyal to her husband, whether or not he deserved it. Now, what happened behind closed doors that IS none of his business. Frankly, if Monica didn't go bragging about who she was blowing to her taping recording not friend, nobody would have been any the wiser.

To the guy that asked... Don't you have a better question to ask? I mean really, people MIGHT be asking in their own circles, you might have asked a question on a lot of people's minds, but really ... Lewinski is old news, LET IT GO, there are more important things to  worry about!!

I have one disc of Sherlock Holmes remaining to watch. I'm starting it up now. I have a few odds and ends to attend to around the house. 1 AM and I'm folding clothes and what not.  Sorted a pile of stuff to go back in the youngin's room.

Dinner ended up to be burgers and fries. I need to separate and freeze the hamburger. Not sure if making the meat pie or sausage. Might hit the store for shredded cheese or have Tom to it and make my own version of the pie.

Need to call the bank and check on deposits and balance. Hopefully, getting ready to kick the IRS mess in the ass a bit.

Barring rain, Thursday should be a good day to get to work in the yard. Tuesday can be used for dumping the fridge, laundering the throw rugs and mopping the kitchen floor. I figure I can toss the meat pie into cook before doing either job and it would be left to warm after cooking.

Need to have a long chat with my dear son. Since his work schedule has been changed to help accommodate his forthcoming school schedule, if I set up dental appointments on Tuesday or Thursday, he can drop me off and pick me up at the office or the library, which is open late on those nights.

Need to get the paving sand so Kevin and Tom can work on the walkway out to the game building. Also need to get a roll of screening so Tom can repair the screen again. Need to measure the windows that we no longer have screens for.

I have a few writing projects that I would like to get moving on.

It's all over the news by now, Heath Ledger is dead. :(
yellowrosetx: (Default)
The assassination of Bhutto in Pakistan, Time Warner wising up and not sticking digital locks on their downloaded music, and the tiger that escaped her enclosure; she killed one and mauled two.

The only thing I'm going to comment on there is the tiger.  I am in no way intending to diminish the loss of life or the wounds the young men received. Those are horrendous. What bothers me that one of the wounded kids felt the need to lie about the whereabouts of the young man that died before the incident at the zoo. Supposedly,  they were in the zoo after closing time. While I'm sure that a large zoo deals with stragglers not leaving by closing time that coupled with the lies to the parents leads me to believe that some sort of mischief was afoot.

When I first read the article, I wondered why those three and no one else. Seemed odd to me that a tigress would kill one person and specifically track down two others in a zoo that was full of people. Then I read the part about it being after closing and said hmm... possible planned mischief.

I read the comments posted on the article AOL published and was amazed to see that someone actually asked the question, "Why was there no water in the moat in the tiger enclosure? What's the point of a dry moat?" I thought.. now, there's someone that's either ignorant of the behavior of large cats or they are stupid! I looked at my kid and said, "Why's the moat dry?" He said... " Because tigers can swim."  However, my son is the one who has been asked the hypothetical question about a zombie attack on our town and knows the best places to go to survive.

I am trying to relax, but it's just not happening. Despite being physically tired, my mind is going bonkers.Nothing new, we know this.

Bergamot incense is delightful. Well, at least it is to my nose!

So, yeah, I slept. I still feel groggy though. I guess that's just how things are.

I got my dress. Quite frankly, it took longer to find the shop than to pick the dress! Mapquest should have said SOMETHING about the bridge labeled "Capitol of Texas Highway,"  it would have been very helpful!

Now, maybe a lot of IQs have slipped around the world, but mine hasn't. My memory slips a bit, but not THAT much. Pristine, unused ammunition couldn't have been fired at anyone. Yes, yes, it says.. HIT her house, but the natural assumption is that they were fired and that just hain't so.

This floored me: California Man Deported to Mexico Found. With all the illegal aliens they could have deported, they deport a US citizen. Go figure.

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 8) -- A wrongly deported U.S. citizen who was missing for nearly three months in Mexico ate out of garbage cans, bathed in rivers and was repeatedly turned away by U.S. border agents when he tried to return to California, his family said Tuesday.

Apparently, the fellow was born in the US of Mexican parents and is mentally disabled. He was deported after serving 20 days of a 120 jail sentence. It's a sad state of affairs when they DO NOT deport the one that need to be and deport a natural born citizen. Go figure.

And then there's the story of the seven year old that jumped the counter in a store where her mother was working to run after a robber. Her mother was calling 911 and didn't realize the kid had run after him until after she was out the door. While that wasn't the smartest move, I have to wonder about the mentality of the people saying the kid is stupid because she's a mixed race child. Or to paraphrase my son, Why are those people that believe in white supremacy always the poorest examples of the race? My kid is so smart sometimes that it scares me.

It's one of those days when I feel like I've been run over with a steam roller. Ugh.

Current audio book is The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry.

For those that have loved ones in Minneapolis, I hope none of them were on or anywhere near that bridge that collapsed. My first thought when I saw I-35W was oh, shit, that's 4 hours away. For those don't know, there's also I-35W in DFW (That's Dallas-Fort Worth for the Texas impaired).

The big news coming out of there is about a school bus that had 52 children and nine adults on it, all survived.

2:15 PM
The day just got a little brighter thanks to one friend's delightful sense of humor and [livejournal.com profile] magicwoman letting us know she's safe!

More later.
yellowrosetx: (Default)

At the library on Monday, I grabbed six audio books, 2 DVDs and 2 books. Yes, kids, I grabbed a ::drum roll:: cookbook. I grabbed a book of slow cooker recipes. I'm going to be scanning a lot, I think. And using my crock pot. It's especially great in the summer because instead of heating the entire kitchen, I only need to worry about one small corner.

Current audio book is Everything and a Kite by Ray Romano.

In the news, Fisher Price is recalling several toys in their Sesame Street and Nickelodeon lines. If you bought toys recently that were made by Fisher-Price, go read that. Now, I don't want to bad mouth Chinese manufacturing, but if they are going to be producing things for sale in the US they should conform to the US safety standards.

Today is one of those I want my mom days. Don't ask, I'm just having a mood. Have been since the wee hours of the morning, just couldn't sleep right. I hate being weepy and biting on people. Maybe I will nap when we get back from dinner.

It's also one of those, WTF is wrong with people days! I'm sure everyone has heard about the deaths at VA Tech by now. :(

Brother Odd has reserves on it at the library, so it went back. I'll get it another time. So, the next audio book in line is Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs.

We are going to the Japanese hibachi restaurant for dinner. They rock.  Also want to make a stop at Big Lots.

Tomorrow has two possibilities. If we go out, the car gets an oil change, etc. and we get some groceries. If not, we get one or both of the storage carts cleaned and put up. Odds are it will be a remain at home day. I have three loads of laundry to put away. That can be done when we get home. I can watch the next episode on my Bones DVDs. Speaking of Bones, I'm wondering if Liz would like that show since she likes CSI.

I managed to get a couple of pieces up in [livejournal.com profile] navarra. One is pretty much fluff, the other has to do with the Great Redcap Hunt. Looks like the main battle should finally get cracking, I hope.

A friend recently posed the question.. .what's wrong with people? I read something that made me wonder the same thing.
Those of you that are animal lovers will be sickened and angered by this: 2 teens get 10 years in tortured puppy case Brothers receive little sympathy from judge.More on this story. )

And in the hoorah for my old school dept: Mystery Ailment Strikes Honeybees. Penn State has discovered a disease that's killing honey bees. This is good and bad. Good that it's been found and might be stoppable, bad news that it exists at all.

Gov. Rick Perry has pretty much pissed me off. Sure, Gardasil's ability to help prevent cervical cancer is great thing, but requiring girls entering the sixth grade to have the inoculation is ridiculous!! It's been discovered that certain types of human papillomavirus cause cervical cancer, the catch is that this vaccine apparently only combats the strains that are sexually transmitted. If this is indeed the case then it's about as insulting as the random usage of silver nitrate in the eyes of all newborns. It ONLY prevents blindness if the mother is infected with Gonorrhea. Considering they test for all sorts of things through out the course of a pregnancy, I still find it insulting when hospitals use that as standard procedure. I also find it insulting that the governor of Texas has single handedly decided that the vaccine will be required and therefore assumed the all girls in the Texas school system are sexually active at 11 or 12 years old. Sad, isn't it?

I know popular usage allows for the name of this month to be pronounced "Feb-you-ary," but I don't. There's an R after the B, demmit!

Saturday's list is pretty short:
Clean up
Fridge
Laundry
Office
Tom's room and bathroom

The garage needs to be cleaned up, but it's much too chilly out there.

This spring I want to get my flowers attended to and make the backyard look better. I still need to put that last bag of marble rock under my yellow rosebush. Kevin wants to get the wood on the outside of the house taken care of. I'd like to have a roof over the patio. Nothing huge, just about 6 by 4. That's about the size of the patio slab. I'd like to be outside more often, but not in the direct sun as I sunburn easily. We agree that we both want that new patio door, hopefully, that will be this year as well.

Eventually, and likely part of the wood replacement project, the pillars out front need to be refurbished or removed. I've always thought it would be nice to have arbor of some sort there for the morning glory vines to climb.
Something like this.

Today, I did some fiction writing. Once I finish with my photo printing project, I can do the labels. Then I think I have more fiction to write.

Sad news for comedy fans, Peter Boyle, best known as Frank on Everybody Loves Raymond, passed away today.

Good news for today! I got a beautiful Christmas card in the mail from [livejournal.com profile] ladybast. Also got an adorable card from [livejournal.com profile] mistralwind! Thank you! :)

Today is Veteran's Day. A day for remembering and being thankful for the sacrifices made on our behalf by the men and women that have served in the Armed Forces. Nanny used to refer to this day as Armistice Day, until I was older, I didn't know why. When you are a kid, what you understand most is ... day off from school. Armistice Day commemorates the signing of the treaty (or armistice) that ended World War I.

A bit of trivia, in my senior year of high school, the last football game of the season was at the homefield of our arch rival on Nov. 11, 1977. The score was 19-18. We won. I just find it interesting that the score was the same as the year the war ended and the game was on the same day.

Now.. to get all Emily Littella on this... What's all this fuss about the pledge of allegiance again? It seems student leaders at Orange Coast College have decide to restrict the Freedom of Speech of their fellow students. Oh, yes, I know... only Congress is not allowed to do that according to the Constitution and these young people have opted to ban it at their meetings. Apparently it only applies to meetings of the student board of trustees and no other groups on campus.

A school official had this to say:

Martha Parham, a spokeswoman for the Coast Community College District, said her office had no standing on the student board and took no position on the flag salute ban.

"If their personal belief is that they don't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance, the district certainly isn't going to dictate what they do," she said.

I just want to know when colleges started being in districts like public schools.

Isn't California where the atheist doctor was from that tried to say making his daughter say the pledge violated her rights? What scares me about that is we have a doctor that didn't bother to do the most basic research into his case history. His daughter didn't object to saying under God because she was raised as a Christian, therefore, it wasn't really violating her rights at all. I think it's freaking hilarious that a man who calls himself the Rev. Dr. Michael Newdow is an atheist.

Wasn't it also in California where all this mess started about one man/one woman after the rumblings in Washington? California had it built into the state constitution and there was San Fransisco, one of its own cities challenging it.

The Declaration of Independence has this nice little thing in it about "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." As long as someone's pursuit of happiness does no harm to anyone else, I just don't see the fuss. I mean really... all this crap now has probably set off a chain reaction that wasn't expected. In some state, it's now a nono to marry and/or have a domestic partnership with a person of the same gender. Well, how does one define a domestic partnership? Does this now mean that parents will have to worry their college student offspring needing to be bailed out at same point for having a roommate of the same gender? I bet they weren't thinking about that when they went to the polls to say no to gay marriage, etc.

And people laughed when we, here in Texas, voted for allowing concealed handguns with permits? Statistics have proven that crime has gone down. We hear far less about car jackings. Why? Well.... if you have any working brain cells, you'd be wondering if you do try to jack a car on the highway if it will be the last time you ever do anything. I'm surprised that more states didn't jump on that bandwagon and say... "Hey, this could work for us." This not to say that handgun ownership is the solution to everything, it's not. It's just... in most cases laws just keep honest people honest.

The spark plug for the passage of that law was a massacre in a local cafeteria. All they wanted to do was have lunch. Many people were touched by that event in many ways. I know a girl that lost her father, she was in our Scout troop.

Anyway... getting back to my point, I have to wonder how many more things that start in California are going to end up shaking up the country .... aaaaaaaaaaagain.

Taking a short break in between cleaning and laundry.

Tossed laundry around, have to fold and store.

I read the news story about the New Jersey mother who was run over and killed while teaching her daughter to drive. I guess I'm mercenary I was wondering what if it wasn't an accident. The daughter isn't being charged. Don't get me wrong, I'm not reveling in the lady's death, but the rule in most states is the licensed driver is SUPPOSED to be in the passenger seat of the car with the learner in the driver's seat. I think this woman's death is perfect example of why standing BEHIND the car is a bad idea.

Every so often my dear husband gets a case of foot in mouth disease.  Here's a good example.

We had a power failure on Sunday, so, instead of being in the spiffy new building, the gamers were outside in the yard. So... Kevin made a comment about the house being filled with things because I never throw anything away. He also commented that he throws things away when I'm not looking, but Tom tattles on him. He apparently forgot that the windows were open and I yelled out... "He doesn't have to tattle on you, you just tattled on yourself!" Laughter abounded from the group. However... it also might explain why his CD case went missing as well as any number of things that have walked off. He tosses shit and forgets. As long as it's HIS OWN shit and not my shit or things that are not JUST his, I don't really care. The problem is that it is often not HIS shit that he tosses out. Then I go looking for it, it's gone and I get told... "You're crazy, you must have tossed it" or something or that kind.... Uh.... who admitted in front of witnesses to tossing things out behind my back and bitched about who saves shit? Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah.

Anyway.... life goes on.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] dbvixxen!

I'm cleaning out my e-mail folders. A lot of stuff needs to be archived and gotten off my hard drive. I mean... I have cache files in my AOL from 2003... I have no idea what their purpose is, other then hogging space on my hard drive. Individually, they are only 32K or so, but added up they are 8 MB. So, I wonder, how many of those things do I have on my hard drive that I don't know about? Many of the recipes, etc. that I posted recently are from that "pile o' stuff" that I was holding onto for tips, recipes, etc. It's not that I need the space in my e-mail, it's that things get hard to track after a while. I mean how many e-mails would I need to search through to find a certain recipe or household tip? Tooooooo many. Bagging and tagging is easier.

On Snopes.com )

I didn't get the baskets dropped off. However, anything else that was not on the personal list is done. So... off to fold laundry at 9:38PM. The other half will be home soon and dinner is hoagies.

So much for that.. clothes aren't dry, yet.

10:39 PM

Food was gooooooooooood. Off to play Sims 2 or The Movies. Later people!

I got most of the things done on my Friday list. I opted to forgo the garden centers because I went nuts at Target's after Easter clearance. It's only April and already the heat or something is getting to me.

Monday, I will be cleaning out that Rubber maid storage shed on the patio. I picked up a couple of those little digging tools at Target for a buck. I'm not sure if my old ones are wrecked or not, but they were a buck apiece, so, it's no financial loss if I have two sets.
Need to dig up a plastic storage box from the garage to put said tools in.

Well, stick me with a fork, I'm bitching about dumbasses again.. )

Lately, I just don't seem to have the urge to write anything outside my journal. Well, to be more precise I have too many ideas rolling in my head and they get muddled. I started a few pieces as well as done some for the Great Redcap Hunt, but ... it's like I'm second and third guessing some of those things.

Craft wise, I have finished the stitching on the four main panels for one of the plastic canvas vases. I need to cut the pieces for the base then the next step is putting it together.

Current reading/audio
Le Morte d'Arthur by Mallory (cassette)
The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt (CD)

Finished tagging and realigning 2001 Jan-Oct LJ entries

UHBS - Laundry : 2 loads away, 1 in dryer, one in washer
