I was reading the memories people had regarding September 11; it reminded me of what happened locally in Luby's cafeteria in 1991.

That event was a huge spur added to the kicking to pass the concealed handgun law in Texas. One of the survivors, Suzanna Gratia, was elected to the state legislature.

People can tell me that they don't like handguns being in the possession of the average law abiding American citizen, but I believe in the Right to Bear Arms. I remember people saying that if the law passed that Texas would have people accidentally shooting each other left and right. The truth is, gun accidents have not gone up, but incidents of car jackings and a few other violent crimes are down.

Laws are made, in my opinion, to keep honest people honest. Those that are going to break the law will do it regardless of the laws. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them and I suppose I'll be an outlaw. Until people have actually faced a situation where their life or that of a loved one is at stake; they do not realize that handguns are not just a topic for discussion. They are a tool to be used for protection.

It's funny how the people is interpreted as the citizens of the United States when discussing the Freedoms of Religion, Speech, and of the Press, yet, there's a fuss over who exactly the people are when discussing the Right to Bear Arms.

I read a quote from Janet Reno that truly honks me.
"Waiting periods are only a step. Registration is only a step. The prohibition of private firearms is the goal."

I'm not 100% certain since I can't locate the text for the Oath of Office for the US Attorney General, but I think there's a clause in there, as there is in the one for the President, about upholding and defending the Constitution.

I think my thoughts are more in tune with those of Suzanna Gratia Hupp.

"Let me make a point here, in case this isn't becoming extremely clear. My state has gun control laws. It did not keep Hennard from coming in and killing everybody! What it did do, was keep me from protecting my family!"

"Somewhere along the line I made one of my stupidest decisions... I was afraid that ... if ... somebody caught me with the gun in my purse, I could lose my license to practice, lose my ability to make a living. So I took the gun out of my purse and I left it in my car ... which the laws in my state are kinda wishy- washy on ...and I thought, 'Heck, if I needed it, it's probably going to be when I'm out on the road ... in the middle of nowhere and, you know, my car's broke down or something."

While some businesses here do have signs posted that prohibit guns being on site, most don't. And that goes back to what I said about keeping honest people honest.
