Sunday Sundries
Apr. 14th, 2008 01:19 amI have some lovely, relaxing Gonesh incense burning and am wrapped up in a snuggly blankie. Maybe a cup of hot tea is in order as there's a slight chill in the air, tonight.
I cleaned up the better part of the house while my computer was digesting the reinstallation of my software.
Friday, we went to Red Lobster for dinner. I tried their shrimp in lobster butter. It was very nice, but I prefer shrimp on the barbie from Outback. I indulged one of my addictions, Hobby Lobby. I came home with a spool of crochet thread and some lovely stones. That reminds me, I need to put the stuff in the proper containers.
Saturday, we went to Wal-mart for steel toed sneakers of all things. The boys came to game in the evening, that leaves Sunday for a couple of things, but mostly relaxation. Well... providing the youngin does what he needs to without a fuss. Need to get the grocery run done. Tim needs to get a few things done in his room. (So, what else is new?)
I got some more done on the pink photo album.
Sunday night...
or Monday morning, something like that. Kept the house in decent order, went grocery shopping, got the pet net up, and generally had the peaceful day I had hoped for.
Only drawback in that Saturday was the first night we had our windows shut in weeks and today my nose is clogging and my throat is a bit itchy.
Monday, I plan on sausage and spaghetti for dinner. Might get really ambitious and make dessert. Need to stay on top of the laundry pile and general pick up. Need to have Tom get his room in order again, get his laundry put up, get my leather kit out of his room. Need to get the two boxes I left in the kitchen sorted and the stuff put away. Next step is getting the figures on the table in the garage off and on their way.
Round And Around
Jul. 20th, 2007 03:13 amIt's 12:30 AM on Friday.. yes, it took this long for me to get back to this!!
I spent 3 or 4 hours in the backyard with Tom. The results are ok, but not fantabulous. I wish I had a better backing for the flowers, but for now it will do to keep a lot of weeds from coming between the fences and holding down the weed paper until I find an alternative. If it was one solid sheet or one height it might not looks so fugly, but at the moment it serves a purpose. Some of the bags of mulch and potting soil had been rained on so many times that they were stuck tight to the ground. We used two bags of mulch and two of potting soil so far. I have yet to open the black volcanic rock to top the pile!
All in all Thursday was productive. Got a bunch of trash out of the garage, picked up the house, and did a pile of laundry. I put the better part of the meat I just got into the freezer. I'm thinking sausage for Saturday dinner.
Friday will be busy, but not extremely so. General clean up (That's dishes, bed making and the other everyday things. ) and putting away laundry. Currently one load in the washer, one drying, and one ready to fold.
Doing the Harry Potter thing in the evening.
Behind the cut are some of the results of Thursday's attempts at gardening. Large image warning!

Another Day in Insanity Village
Apr. 16th, 2007 03:16 amAlmost wrote that as Unsanity... Alrighty then.
Still reading Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs, listening to Brother Odd by Dean Koontz, and finished Stephen King's Bag of Bones.
I have about 90 minutes before I need to wake Tom for his 3 AM meds.
Need to hit the library to return the items that are due. Need to renew Brother Odd. I have plenty at home to busy myself rather than to get more that I haven't already started. I still have things out from the Army library that aren't due until 1 May.
I need to clean the frames for the two plastic storage carts going into Tom's room. We've reached a bit of a compromise on what is going where in there. Yes, I know, this is taking forever, but, I want it done right and with my wonky knee and hip, well, hauling and lifting takes a while.
"The Cave" (Yes, you read that right.) needs new flooring and instead of those yucky blinds some nice lined drapes. The cat that passed made such a wreck out of the carpeting in there that himself ripped it all out, pad and all and left it out for bulk trash. I call it the "The Cave" after something I read. I think it was "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus." It was something about men needing to retreat into their equivalent of a bear's cave to hide out. I need to check a few of the boxes in there for things like pens, batteries, etc. Batteries go ick after a while. And there's no point in keeping dried out paints or markers. That used to be our daughters' room.
Most of the flowers out back are making an effort to thrive despite the snow last weekend. One rosebush, a Scent from Above, on the downslope was definitely dead. Apparently, it was uprooted by something, but I think it was dead long before that. However, the Blaze of Glory is full of leaves and climbing up the fence. No flowers, yet, but red leaves on rose bushes generally means new growth.
In the upper section of the yard, the three I planted not that long ago are fighting, ( Golden Showers, Joseph's Coat, and one other, a white one the name escapes me at the moment) I think the snow was not helpful, but they are alive.
Four against the fence are full of leaves and one is blooming. The Nancy Reagan has yet to disappoint. My dear husband point out that some plants are just determined to survive. It's just as tough as the woman they named it after. Along that section of fence is a natural waterline, so it's got plenty to drink. The Sundance is full of leaves as is the Blue Moon. The Sterling Silver was starting to bloom when the snow hit, not good. It survived that and is leafy, but apparently, it's decided to wait on more blossoms.
Four of out the five bushes out front are ready to run. Out front there's another Golden Showers that's huge. It grows up about three feet or so then bends forward in a cascade. It's gorgeous when it's covered in flowers! The oldest rosebush I have has been in place about 15 years, it's a Summer Snow. There two miniature rosebushes out there, red ones. One has a flower and the other has a few leaves. The last is a Pink Peace.
These are the pictures I took last year. I hope to have more to post this year.
3 AM meds delivered and I'm not talked out, yet.. or is that written out? Somehow, that's an ironic turn of phrase at the moment. Maybe, I am talked out... suddenly drained.
When we were at Wal-mart Monday to buy pants, food, etc. I picked out three grade one roses to plant: Golden Showers (which, hopefully, will be as nice as the one out front), a climbing Joseph's Coat, and a Camelot. There are two out there that are dead dead and I'm going to put healthy ones in their place.
Time Waits on No One
Feb. 9th, 2007 09:22 pmTom has been working and now has a spiffy new computer. Thinking about taking the parts out of his old one and putting them into a newer case. Yes, yes, I know... I could have used Kevin's ancient case. But I turned it in over at the Goodwill. The only reason I want to keep this board, etc. is because it's the only remaining board in the house that I can put the ancient SCSI card in for the old scanner. The scanner still works, but not without its controller card. Now, all the computer hardware people are going.. "No brainer" and the non-hardware people are going... "What language is that?? What'd she say??"
The Sims 2 fans will be pleased to learn the the new expansion, Seasons, is due out at the end of Feb. YAY!!! So, I've been thinking about getting that along with Sim City 4 or whatever it is that I can use to create custom neighborhoods for Sims 2. Yes.. yes.. I've finally lost what little of my mind I still had left and want to attempt to do a Rhydin neighborhood. I found Elf ears for some of my characters. I want to know WTF were some people thinking when they made ears that are pretty much perpendicular to the Sim's head!! It looks like something out of Star Trek.
To the folks that tagged me for memes or sent me surveys, etc. I do apologize, but I've been a bit busy of late. So much to do and times a wasting.
So.. here's what I've been doing:
I have one audio book in progress, an Amelia Peabody, and am STILL working my way through The Lady of the Sorrows.
I've been cleaning house. Sort of.
I'm looking forward to March. It will be warm enough to be outside to get the flowers attended to and cool enough to not fry out there. By the time May ends it's too hot to do anything.
Two or three writing projects in progress.
A plastic canvas tote bag is my latest craft project. I have the short sides done, have the apples stitched into the long sides and need to cut the base.
Oh, yes, and I installed a new hard drive. I'm now running 250GB instead of 40. Much more space.
On my wants lists: Hair coloring, pedicure, dog grooming, etc. etc. Need to call Monday or stop by for the dog appointment. Have to make sure I don't schedule it for when Tom has his 9 days in a row of work. I'm going to wait until after we deal with the IRS to worry about getting my hair done.
On Saturday's TO DO list: Clean the fridge, mop the kitchen floor and finish the laundry. If it's warm outside put those dang rocks under the Golden Showers rose bush and maybe pick up the garage some.
January's End (Backdated)
Jan. 31st, 2007 11:15 pmIsn't it great when your muse is on vacation and someone has the ability to get you to open your mind and let the flood of thoughts out?
Stream of conscious writing can make for some odd thoughts being written down.
I don't often discuss the female functions of my anatomy, but.. I will say this.. having a period every other month, due to menopause starting is nice, BUT ... double powered PMS sucks moose. BCR helps, but every so often, I feel like I'm on the mental bender from hell.
Despite the cold weather, several of my rosebushes are still green. My Nancy Reagan is still covered in healthy leaves and until mid-December had blooms on it. When we planted that bush, it was set right into a natural water run. While some people are of the mind that putting a plant in underground water like that will rot the roots, I think the hot summers around here tend to make the plants draw on the water and survive better. Simple irrigation.
Stuff'n'puff
Nov. 19th, 2006 06:11 pmCame out of the bedroom to find the dog waggling away with one of those goofy happy doggy grins on his face. That's another good sign. I let him out and was greeted by the sight of my Nancy Reagan rosebush covered in orangish buds. When they open, they are apricot. Next to it, the Sundance has a yellow bud. It's November in Texas and it looks like it will be a glorious day out there.
I probably should be writing and adding to my story, but I feel tapped for the moment.
2:34 PM
I took a nap, I feel good again. Maybe it's snake syndrome. I eat, I get tired.
4:53 PM
I have a pile of pattern books to look through. Christmas and other holidays are coming. It's ornament and things time!! Trying to see what cool stuff I can come up with.

Friday Follies
Nov. 17th, 2006 11:01 pmAnd by the way, what's wrong with the word used anyway? We see preowned, previously viewed... and other such titles slapped on thing. It's still used... sheesh. They think we aren't going to know? The general public isn't THAT dumb.
Am I the only parent that sometimes thinks teenagers are another species? I keep trying to explain to my son that 20 to 30 minutes a day spent in making his bed, picking up his bedroom floor, putting up his laundry, making sure his bathroom is free of trash, dirty laundry, toilet articles are not strewn all over, and picking up after himself in the common areas of the house would save him hours of being bitched at.. but does he listen... Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. It's not like I even ask him to wash his clothes, just fork over the dirty ones and put away the clean ones.
So, later today, we are cleaning out the Explorer and doing the backyard trash pick up.
I have a kitchen table that's "full of parts." I'm clearing off the catch all table that was holding much of my "in progress" stuff. I keep finding a lot of WIP (works in progress) all over the house.
10:36 PM
Tried out a new recipe, Tangy Chicken in Citrus Sage Sauce, it was interesting. Next new one we try will be Bavarian Pork Chops.
We had a minor change in plans in the outdoor work today. The car is cleaned out, the trash is picked up, but we didn't do the trellis or clean up around the tree. We ended up washing the dog. There was a very pleasant surprise out back. Two of my rosebushes have buds on them, the Sterling Silver and the Nancy Reagan. I cleared up a pile of stuff in the living room and started sorting the things to be sent out for the holidays.
Monday's Mutterings. (backdated)
Aug. 28th, 2006 11:59 pmI starting doing a bag and tag on Dec 2002 entries.
Worked in the yard today. Finally finished remulching, etc. the white rosebush out front. Got a lot of the wood scrap pile rerouted. By that, I mean I'm using some of it to cover the grass between rosebushes to make those easier to mulch when the weather cools. Still have some scrap wood to get rid of, but we did get a bag of mess into the trash for pick up tomorrow. Need to pick up the small pieces of wood that are still out there.
And something occurred to me.. why do people say the creation of the Catholic church instead of the division of it. Technically speaking, it's the other Christian sects that broke from Catholicism. Remember that the first Pope was "seated" in Rome.
I need to make dental appointments, an eye appointment, and call the vet's office to remind them that Shottie had his shots and the reminder cards aren't needed for this year as well and to see if they have the Frontline flea collars.
I have writing to do... two personal letters are still dangling and three bills need to be paid. Also there's at least one story chomping at the bit to be told.
Thursday's Tweeting
Aug. 17th, 2006 11:41 pmGot out front and redid one of my rosebushes, the pink peace. Pulled all the weeds and grass out, removed the rocks replenished the potting soil, put the weed paper down, re-mulched and put the rocks back down. I need to get more dark rock or river rock. The white marble rock is nice, but it doesn't mix well with what's there. The white bush is next. Going to do one a week due to the amount of trash it creates. Not to mention we need to get a lot of the trash from the building construction out of the yard as well and we only get one can full. Took about an hour to get the pink one done, I expect it will be longer for the Summer Snow since the base area is wider.
The yellow might be harder to get around since there's plenty of insects around it. I refused to lay any poison down there for a lot of reasons. The main two are that I like the salamanders and they could be be poisoned by eating the critters that the stuff is meant for.. and.... if the underground ant colony is disturbed, they are likely to head right into the house. We discovered that it's not the big ants invading from time to time, but teeny ones. Probably better to leave well enough alone since they are content to forage in the trash can.
Had a fine show from nature while I was out there, the dragonflies were in fine form and doing their air ballet.
Friday's to do list:
Put away gardening supplies.
UHBS (laundry, dishes, cooking, etc.) Extra from daily stuff is the fridge clean out.
Tom needs to scrub down his whole bathroom.
Wal-mart: laundry soap, dryer sheets, small box for Explorer trunk, and the river rocks. Maybe something for dinner, I don't know.
Pick up laundry at the cleaners. Can also do that on Saturday.
Want to get some work done on my most recent craft project.
Need to print some pictures and write at least one personal letter.
Need to send a request for a forwarding address to a post office in PA.
General Things (Photo)
Jul. 21st, 2006 09:31 pmI was outside with the weed whacker again. My Blue Moon rose has finally bloomed. Looks nothing like the color in the catalog, but it's lovely nonetheless. Diana, Princess of Wales is also blooming. Sundance is finally in the ground, Tom planted it earlier.
It's very hot out there... but this is Texas, so that's normal this time of year.
Tom took himself to driving school today, boy is that weird! What's weirder is being the only human in the house for a while. I'm not too worried about it. There's big police presence in my neighborhood. Some days, I think think half of them live over here. The DEWS (Doggy Early Warning System) will let me know if anyone gets to the sidewalk let alone the yard or front door.
Kevin and I were over at Home Depot, the other day, looking at paneling for his building. I got this idea into my head to go look at patio doors. I wanted French doors instead of the sliding door that's there now. The door is getting to be a royal pain and doesn't work like it used to. I have visions of getting so pissed that I fling it and shatter it. Mostly, I'm tired of unintentionally locking myself out back. Costs nothing to look at Home Depot and since we were already there, it didn't even cost extra gas.
Anyway.... the only French doors they had were wooden interior doors. Very nice, but that was just NOT going to work as a back door.. Kevin spotted one of the displays and liked it. It's door with two side lights, that open for ventilation, and mini-blinds built into them. YAY!!! No curtains needed, no worrying about cleaning the blinds, At first I was thinking a wood tone would be nicer, but the non-wood trim on the window is white. So, I think the patio door, patio roof and other exterior repairs and cosmetic upkeep to the house is going to be our project beginning next spring. Too hot to do a door removal now and I say next spring because Kevin's game building is this year's project.
So, that puts the following on the wishlist:
New patio door
Patio Roof
Exterior wood repairs (including replacement and painting)
Driveway extension and drainage
Yard Swing
Some sort of large trellises out. Been thinking about lattice pieces.
I'm thinking that maybe once the building is done and the game stuff is cleared out of the garage that the garden tools can go back in there. We could put a swing on the patio. That would be an even better idea when we have a door that I don't have to fight with.

Round and Around
Jul. 16th, 2006 11:59 pmAs most of you know, my son, Tom is doing the driving school thing. I need to send the rest of the payment with him on Monday. Also need to pay the phone and a couple of other bills since this is a payday week.
Kevin made a wish list of things he would like for the house. I think I should make one, too. Hey, if I'm going to dream, I should dream big. Thing is, there's nothing "that" big I can think of that I want or need. Mostly, it's a bunch of little things that add up.
Took Tom to practice parallel parking down at the DPS. He did a good job of it.
Finished using the trimmer along the fence line. Looks much better. Still need to have Tom get what's out front between the fences. Seems some of the morning glory vine took root by the fence. Now, there's a perfect place for it since morning glories seem to choke out weeds but not my roses. The jasmine plants are still quite healthy, but aren't growing all viney like I was told they should be.
More later.
And it's Saturday...
Jul. 8th, 2006 08:31 pmThe catch phrase between my son and me has been, "why is the rum gone," for the last few weeks. That's what we say when someone asks an inane question. Makes life easier ... like "That's Montage up there." That is what my husband and I use inside of, "Shut up, I'm tired of that story!" Reason being that when we lived in Wilkes-Barre, PA and used to travel up to see my folks, we would pass Montage Mountain Ski Resort, which was something often talked about when we were kids and referred to as "The Montage Project." Invariably, ONE of us would say... that's Montage up there. So, there you have it.
I should be reading or working on my needlework, I have a nice project started. Thinking about doing a couple of them, but will see how this one comes out first.

Another Day of things to do....
Jul. 5th, 2006 10:26 pmSo, here I am again chronicling the days events.
We have tickets for tomorrow's midnight show of Pirates of the Caribbean. YAY!!
Need to get to the bank in my travels today so I won't have to go out in the day tomorrow. Need cash for food before the movie and need bread crumbs for tonight's meatloaf.
Had a bit of a scare last night. Heard this big ass BOOM outside, looked at Kevin and said, "What the fuck?" I mean really... it sounded like someone ran into a parked car. So, we ran onto to see because the Buick was parked on the street. And what to our wondering eyes should appear, but .... a small firetruck. YES, A FIRETRUCK. The driver just wished us a good evening, I think they were checking the neighborhood out because we live near a wooded area. For the most part, the people in our neighborhood are experienced with explosives, but uh.... there's always the idiot and shit happens factors.
Timer going off 1:26 PM, time to get back out in the yard.
( More adventures in Gardening )
They posted this in the Snopes RSS feed today and I wanted to share. Mother Nature has some spectacular shows, this is one of the most beautiful and nonhazardous ones.
Ended up not going out today, toooo tired after fighting with the weed whacker and its errant spool of cutting line. So, tomorrow, it's yard, driving school for Tom and the bank while he's there. Already called and there's room in the new class. They will even let him take a class in the morning on Wednesday to make up for his church days. Told him he'd have to make up one day for missing today. So, it's set, he's pitching a fit, too bad.
More later.
Independence Day and Other Happenings
Jul. 4th, 2006 11:18 pmI hope everyone has had a safe and happy holiday.
Got some of the yard work done, Mother Nature chose to pound on us for about an hour with a downpour; it was lovely, though as we needed the rain and it wasn't the thunderboomer that was predicted. ! I tried out the new weed whacker. Was doing a good job until two things happened, the cutting cord had to be redone and, of course, the rain. I got the sidewalks and one side of the driveway done before that happened. After the rain, Tom and I went back out. We succeeded in cutting down much of the morning glory that has run wild out there. Tomorrow, since dumb ass me managed to cut off the flowers on the rosebush that's encased in the morning glory, we will be digging out the morning glory and trimming down the rose bush. I did, however, manage to get the flower into a pot with soil. Hopefully, that will save it.
The morning glory used to have gorgeous blue flowers, but it hasn't had them in many years. On one side of the porch, it's not a huge problem, but I'm seriously considering digging the other one out as it has developed roots as thick as a young tree. We also discovered what appears to be a large ant colony under there. The soil looks like it was tilled to perfection. This explains where the ants have been coming from that get into my son's room and the from bathroom. We'll see if they vacate or stay out of the house.
So, tomorrow, we prune the rose bush down and dig out the morning glory before Tom goes to church.
Not much else to say right now.
